Biodegradable Wedding Confetti: The Complete Guide (2026)
Partager
Hydrangea petals, PDO lavender, or a floral blend? More and more venues are banning paper or plastic confetti—and more and more couples are looking for something more beautiful, fragrant, and eco-friendly than colored paper circles for their ceremony exit. This guide brings together everything you need to know to choose, measure, and create a successful 100% natural confetti toss: the types of dried flowers, quantities per guest, authorization issues, and our workshop tips for unforgettable photos.
Why choose biodegradable confetti for your wedding?
The first reason is often practical: many town halls, châteaux, and estates prohibit or limit paper and plastic confetti due to cleaning costs and residues that linger for weeks in gravel and lawns. Confetti made solely of dried petals and flowers decomposes naturally within a few weeks and leaves no trace—which is why it is accepted in the vast majority of venues, even where traditional confetti is banned.
The second reason is aesthetic. A dried petal is unlike anything else: it floats, twirls, and slowly falls in the light. In photos of the ceremony exit, the difference from paper is spectacular. And some flowers—lavender first and foremost—add what paper can never offer: a scent. A cloud of PDO lavender as the newlyweds pass by is an olfactory memory your guests will cherish for a long time.
Finally, there's coherence. If your wedding celebrates nature—dried flowers as decor, a rustic table, a natural setting—vegetal confetti simply extends this intention to the sky.
What type of natural confetti to choose? A comparison
Not all natural confetti is created equal: each flower has its own texture, color, scent, and way of falling. Here are the three main families we dry in our workshop in Drôme Provençale.
Dried hydrangea petals—absolute lightness
Hydrangea is the king of photogenic throws. Its petals, with a texture similar to tissue paper, are so light that a liter weighs only 7 to 15 grams: they float and fall slowly, like a veil. In white hydrangea petals, their natural ivory-cream hue enhances chic bohemian weddings and white/cream palettes. In pastel—Pink, Blue, or Pink & Blue Mix, they adorn soft and colorful themes. Both are sold by volume, from 0.5 L to 24 L, from color test to weddings with 300 guests.
Fine PDO lavender—the scent of Provence
Lavender is the only confetti that is felt as much as it is seen. Our spikes come from fine PDO lavender from Haute-Provence, hand-harvested in July on plateaus above 800 meters. In pure lavender, the toss is a deep purple cloud, intensely fragrant. In PDO lavender & old rose petals, purple combines with pale pink for a more romantic look, with a floral and powdery scent.
Floral blends—the color of the terroir
For a colorful and warm toss, the blends combine several dried flowers and fruits. Our natural blend brings together old rose, PDO lavender, golden calendula, and amber citrus—the complete palette of Provence. The Mediterranean blend adds olive leaves, for weddings on terraces, under pine trees, or by the sea. And the Provence olive, lavender, calendula & hydrangea blend combines the green of the olive tree and the purple of lavender in a resolutely Southern spirit.

How much confetti to plan per guest?
This is the question all couples ask us. The answer depends on the type of confetti, as they are not measured in the same way: extremely light hydrangea petals are sold by the liter; denser blends (lavender, rose, calendula, citrus) are sold by weight.
| Number of guests | Hydrangea petals (per liter) | Blends by weight |
|---|---|---|
| 10 to 20 | 1 to 2 L | 50 to 100 g |
| 30 to 40 | 3 to 4 L | 100 to 300 g |
| 50 to 70 | 5 to 6 L | approx. 300 g |
| 100 and more | 8 to 10 L | 1 kg |
These benchmarks correspond to a small cone or a handful per guest at the moment of exit. Each product page includes its precise guide, format by format, adjusted to the density of the blend—rely on it for the final order. And if you also plan an aisle runner or table decoration, add one size up: a little too much is better than a timid cloud.
Will your venue accept confetti?
This is the point to settle before ordering. Many venues display "confetti prohibited"—but this prohibition almost always targets paper and plastic. Ask the question, specifying that it is dried flower petals, 100% biodegradable, without dye or treatment, which decompose in a few weeks without mandatory cleaning. In the vast majority of cases, the answer is yes. For town halls, inquire about the forecourt: some municipalities regulate all throws on public roads, natural or not. In case of doubt, we can provide you with the product sheet to send to your venue or wedding planner.
When to order your wedding confetti?
Earlier than you think—and that's good news. Our confetti is made to order in 3 to 5 business days, then shipped to France and Europe. Stored in a dry place, away from heat and light, they retain their colors and scent for 12 months. So you can order one to two months before the wedding with peace of mind, receive your sachets, prepare your cones calmly—and keep your mind free for the rest.
Successfully tossing (and photographing)
Some workshop tips, gathered from our clients' weddings. Prepare individual kraft paper cones or small bags, distributed to guests during the ceremony—a coordinated toss is ten times more beautiful than a circulating sachet. Designate someone to give the signal at the moment of exit. Ask guests to toss upwards, in an arc, rather than towards faces: the petals then fall like rain around the newlyweds. And warn your photographer: burst mode is their best ally, because hydrangea petals remain suspended for several seconds—that's precisely where the most beautiful images are hidden.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between fine PDO lavender and lavandin?
Lavandin is a hybrid grown on plains for industry, with a camphoraceous scent. Fine PDO lavender from Haute-Provence grows at altitude, under a protected designation of origin, and offers a finer, softer, and more durable scent—that's what we use in all our lavender confetti.
Can natural confetti be used indoors?
Yes. Dried petals do not stain and can be swept up with a few strokes of a broom. Many couples also use them as table decoration, scattered on tablecloths or around floral centerpieces.
How far in advance should I order?
Allow for artisanal production (3 to 5 business days) plus delivery. Since confetti keeps for 12 months in a dry place, ordering one to two months before the big day is ideal—with no risk to freshness.
What to do with leftover confetti after the wedding?
Nothing goes to waste: they become table decorations for your next dinners, fragrant potpourri in a dish, or—for lavender—a few pinches in a warm bath. And if there's still some left, the compost welcomes it without ceremony.
Can a blend be created in our wedding colors?
Yes. Our workshop creates personalized blends—flowers, proportions, shades—to match your confetti to your palette. Visit our Custom-made — Wedding & Events collection or contact us with your moodboard.
Key takeaways
Biodegradable confetti involves three choices: the flower (hydrangea for lightness, lavender for scent, blends for color), the quantity (about one cone per guest—rely on the guide for each product page), and the right timing (order one to two months in advance). The rest is handled by our workshop in Drôme Provençale, flower by flower, by hand.
