A natural Christmas table: green petals, dried citrus and place cards
Partager
For a natural Christmas table, three things are enough: dried citrus for warmth, green petals to echo the tree, and a place card for each guest. No need for plastic baubles or glitter: these pieces go down in a few minutes, smell lovely and can be composted or stored away after the holidays.
Here is how to set the table step by step, how much to plan for, and a few tips to keep it looking good until dessert.

Why pair green and orange at Christmas?
The green of fir branches and the amber orange of dried citrus are complementary colours: side by side, they answer each other without clashing. On a white or ecru linen cloth, they make a warm, natural table, far from the usual red and gold. Green petals bring softness and volume where the branches stay graphic; the orange slices catch the candlelight.
Setting the table in 5 steps
1. The base: linen and branches
Start with a linen tablecloth or table runner, then lay a few branches of fir, eucalyptus or rosemary down the centre. They draw the line of the table and hold everything else. Keep it low so guests can see each other from one end to the other.
2. Dried citrus along the runner
Tuck dried orange slices between the branches, alternating them with pine cones. For a finer effect, mini orange slices can be scattered like confetti around the plates. Our slices are dried slowly in our workshop in the Drôme provençale, with no additives.
3. Green petals scattered by hand
Next, scatter a handful of petals along the runner and around the candle holders. Green hydrangea petals give a fresh, bright green; antique green leans towards a softer sage. For a deeper, fir-tree green, choose dark green rose petals, or mint green for a lighter table. All are natural and biodegradable.
4. Candlelight
Add candles in glass holders, or LED candles. Petals and dried citrus are flammable: always keep a good distance between them and the flame, and never leave a lit candle unattended.
5. A place card for each guest
To finish, set a place card with the guest's name on each plate. Our dried citrus place cards are printed from your list of names and match the slices on the runner. For a keepsake, the wooden name place card is laser-cut in our workshop. Both are personalised: order them early to receive them before Christmas Eve.
How much do you need?
These are guide quantities for a table of 8, with a table runner of about 2 metres:
- Dried orange slices: 25 to 40 slices along the runner.
- Mini slices: a handful around each plate.
- Petals: 0.5 to 1 litre for a light scattering, more for a well-filled runner.
- Place cards: one per guest, plus two or three spare.
The simplest approach is to start light and add more as you lay the table: it is easier to add than to take away.

And after the holidays?
Citrus slices that have not been damaged can be stored flat in a cardboard box and used again next year, on the tree or in a garland. Natural petals can go in the compost. Nothing ends up in the bin, and next year's decoration is already partly ready.
Frequently asked questions
Can you set the table the day before?
Yes. Dried citrus and petals do not wilt: you can prepare the runner the evening before and add just the candles and place cards on the day. Simply avoid damp rooms and direct sunlight.
Which green works best for a Christmas table?
To echo the tree, dark green works best. With white tableware and plenty of candles, a light green such as green hydrangea or mint green adds freshness. You can also mix two greens for a more natural look.
Do the petals stain the tablecloth?
On a dry tablecloth, dried petals do not bleed colour. Avoid placing them on a wet surface or under a dripping glass, as moisture can mark a light fabric.
When should you order to receive it before Christmas?
Slices and petals ship quickly; personalised products, such as name place cards, take longer. We recommend ordering by early December at the latest. Shipping is free from €45 in France and €65 in Europe.
